Learn the Alphabet with the Rock Stepper Play Mat

Learning the alphabet is a huge milestone for young children, opening up a world of reading, writing, and vocabulary. The Rock Stepper play mat features all the letter from the alphabet on its educational side, turning ABCs into a hands-on experience. With both uppercase and lowercase letters displayed on the mat, along with accompanying pictures, children can playfully connect letters with sounds, words, and images. The included flashcards also make learning interactive, helping your child build a strong foundation in language using movement.

Why Physical Interaction with Letters Helps

Kinesthetic learning, or learning through movement, is highly effective for children as they engage with letters in a physical space. Instead of passively watching or listening, they actively touch, jump, or move around, which helps reinforce letter recognition and phonics. The Rock Stepper play mat supports this physical approach, making letter learning memorable and fun.

There are lots of different ways to learn the alphabet with the Rock Stepper mat, here are a few of our favourite methods.

1. Letter Jumping Game

Start with simple letter recognition by calling out a letter and asking your child to jump to that letter on the mat. For example, say, “Can you jump to the letter B?” This helps reinforce letter recognition while making learning active.

2. Letter Sound Association

Use the flashcards to introduce the sounds that each letter makes. Hold up a card, say the letter and its sound, then encourage your child to repeat it. The sound letters are called phonics sounds. They can then step on the matching letter on the mat, reinforcing the connection between the letter and its sound.

3. Picture Matching

Each letter on the mat comes with a corresponding picture to help children connect letters with words (e.g., “A for Apple”). Ask your child to name the picture when they step on a letter, or prompt them with, “What word starts with this letter?”

This activity builds vocabulary and reinforces the idea that letters form the beginning of words. You can ask your child to repeat after you “B for Ball”.

4. Alphabet Tracing

Have your child trace each letter on the mat with their finger, saying the letter out loud as they go. Tracing helps them get familiar with letter shapes and supports early writing skills by developing their fine motor control.

5. Object matching

Ask your little one to find objects around the room that start with the same letter. For example, “Can you find something in that starts with the letter P”.

They can run around finding a “pencil” or a “purse”. Ask them to complete the whole alphabet.

6. Learn with music – Rockstepper Alphabet song

Using music is a great way to learn, we have songs specifically for the Rock Stepper play mat, one is great for learning the letters of the alphabet. You can listen to the songs on all major music streaming servers by searching for Rock Stepper or heading over to music page where there are links to our account.

As great as the Alphabet song is, we don’t want you having to listen to it on repeat so we’ve created a special alphabet playlist which includes the Rock Stepper song along with some other songs to help your little one learn their A to Z.

Beyond ABCs: Early Phonics and Vocabulary

The Rock Stepper play mat supports letter recognition, but it also provides a foundation for phonics and vocabulary as children grow. With the mat’s visual cues and accompanying flashcards, children can start connecting sounds with images and build their phonics skills.

  • Phonics Practice: Focus on specific letter sounds. For example, when your child steps on “S,” ask them to say words that start with the “S” sound, like “sun” or “star.”
  • Vocabulary Expansion: Encourage your child to think of words beyond the mat’s pictures. For example, after saying “apple” for “A,” ask if they can think of more “A” words, like “ant” or “airplane.”
